Chinese Hip Hop?

Written on January 23, 2009 – 8:30 pm | by NoSongUnsung |

When I used to think of music in China, I would picture traditional Chinese music and the phenomenal rhythms that were displayed during the Summer 2008 Olympics.

However, that image changed today as I read this article, “Now Hip-Hop, Too, Is Made in China“, over at The New York Times.

Apparently Hip-Hop has quite an influence on the youth of China. They’re looking for ways to express themselves and stand out from the crowd which is difficult in a country that emphasizes tradition.

In this video hip hop artists talk about the Chinese education system, hip hop, and how the two are connected…

Here’s something new that I learned…The Chinese word for “Hip Hop” is “Shuo chang” and it means “speak sing”.
